One of the funniest things I have ever read. Before getting to the third page I had already busted out laughing so loud it scared my roommates. This is one of Ennis' more political and satirical works, but its probably the funniest. From beginning to end the humor is audacious. Of course like most Ennis books, this one is not for the faint of heart either. The books pokes fun at about everything, even the comic industry. Ennis is a legend and nearly everything he is made is worth reading. This one is worth owning. Also, one of the main characters friends is a sarcastic talking rabbit. How could anyone fit that into a comic? Well Ennis can make just about anything happen.Tags : Garth Ennis' Chronicles Of Wormwood [Garth Ennis, Jacen Burrows] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.

Wormwood is the anti-Christ, no way around it, his dad is Satan and his demonic powers help him fit right into New York. Garth Ennis' Chronicles Of Wormwood Garth Ennis Jacen Burrows 9781592910410 Books Reviews
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Ennis has some issues with Catholicism.
Wormwood treads a lot of the same ground as his earlier work - mostly Preacher and (kind of) True Faith. The cast is certainly the same. God = crazy. Jesus = misunderstood. Pope = corrupt. Devil = conniving. People = mostly awful. Who does that leave as the hero? The Antichrist, of course. (And his talking bunny sidekick.)
There's a fair-to-middling apocalyptic plot, but this is mostly a celestial road trip through Ennis' take on Judeo-Christian mythology. Except for the occasional bout of preachiness, Wormwood is actually entertaining, mostly because of Ennis has enough humor & charisma to pull it off. He clearly has an agenda, but he's conveying it with chuckling and warmth, rather than sarcasm & ranting diatribes.
Burrows contributes solidly. It is a good partnership, as a more stylized artist would've spun the entire work off in a random direction.
[this review was originally posted to goodreads on 1/8/17] this is really probably more like 3.5 stars but i'll be generous and round up because i REALLY love the idea of this, but as usual ennis is just ...well ...himself i guess [judging from what i remember from preacher and his punisher runs]. like it's a really solid idea and plot and whatnot but it's that thing where it kind of starts out as satire/parody but then goes into stupid/offensive stuff just for shock value and not because it has any kind of actual plot relevance or value. and it's not even actually shocking it's just like [sigh] again? seriously? which they kind of even touch on in the graphic novel but i'm like dude you're not being meta you're just being a jerk really. but really A+ for general concept and also for nostalgia value - i first read this like 10 years ago. also A+ for not making jesus white, it's such a low bar to set and yet ...
This was a classic Garth Ennis story I really liked it can't wait to read The boys vol.1-4
I've said everything in the title. This comic is unbelieveble funny, but blasphemous, so be aware if you're easy to offend...
Do you like talking rabbits? Anal sex with ancient heroes? Jesus? Black Jesus? Popes addicted to sex?
Then this book is just for you. Wonderfully written and hysterically addicting.
More people need to read this gem of a book.
This is an enjoyable graphic novel, that I think could have been fleshed out better with a few more issues, or focus on other material. Ennis once again brings his stinging satire here. Some of it clever, some of it makes him look like he's trying way too hard for shock value. Think Howard Stern you have to listen to 2 hours of over-the-top obvious and juvenile banter for one or two gems. Those gems are good though.
Storyline is fun, and nothing too sophisticated. I think he could have gone two different approaches with this
1.) A 6 issues road trip with laughs and shock
2.) Delve deeper into his theories on God/Satan/Armageddon, etc.
He chose the former and I think it works for him. I would have prefered the latter, which is why it got three stars. P.S. It was a definite retread of Preacher though. And suffered the same flaws. Awesome beginning with a lot of promise, but quickly regresses into lewd jokes, shock tactics, and a destination-less plot.
Very re-readable GN though, for those that like to buy.
A masterpiece through and through. Ennis takes you into a world (based on another fictional world. aka, the Bible) where things aren't as any human would've imagined. How he came up with this can only be explained by a mathematical equation that I can't even understand. Anyone who CAN read, SHOULD read this. In fact; I think they use in now to heal persons affected by all types of ailments. I know it'd heal me!
So in conclusion, if you even THINK you may like it, buy it because you WILL like it. I really can't say any more except I can't wait until the next WhateverCon so I meet and thank him for his wonderful work.
P.S. Would definitely be a book that the WestBorough Baptist Church would raise hell over. Lotsa Gore and blasphemous material.
