Loved this book. Single, by choice, a mother by design, strong, challenging the so called norm, and all woman. A mother raising her daughter alone, teaching her to be proud of who she is, not to become who others would have her be. While the daughter is trying to raise her mother to be a "real mom". Teaching her to be like the other mom's. Weren't we all a bit embarrassed by our mother's? Didn't we wish they were just a little more "perfect". I fell in love with this little girl, so determined to help her mom learn how to be a real mom. I loved the mom, determined to understand her daughter. Trying to "walk a mile in her Mary lanes"....not easy when you have on Doc Martins.Tags : Odd Mom Out (Bellevue Wives, Book 1) [Jane Porter] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I love this book, and I like that it’s different perspective than most novels similar to this. I’ve read all the Bellevue bills, but this one is my favorite.
A fun read but the character development was not very good which made it feel repetitive chapter after chapter.
Simply didn't enjoy the book. This is my neck of the woods (Bellevue in general, not Medina, etc, specifically), so when they talk about going to PF Changs, that's my PF Changs. So, interesting to see fiction set locally.
But none of this book felt real to me. It tried too hard. Beat you over the head with the ideas in it. As a working mother, I understand the themes she's trying to cover, but it just didn't come together for me.
I read it quickly because it's an easy read, but when presented with the sequel, I passed.
I was expecting more fun... yet i got an impression the character is a little bitter, with lots of issues and her bitterness just isn't that appealing. i get the point - the character is supposed to showcase how women have equal rights, can be CEOs, strong, independent, etc - BUT there are plenty of books showcasing that without the bitterness, judgement, and darkness... so this read was not as uplifting as one would expect. Also all other women who are housewives portraid in a condescending fashion - of course we can laugh about 'barbie doll' women - yet that should be done w taste, instead of condescendence - which i didn't like at all. making fun of certain life style choices isn't same as judging - and the writing made me feel as it was overly judgmental. Bottom line - overall plot / the idea is nice and has ton of potential, yet the way it's written - it's that funny or cute or even dramatic - more like a diary of a bitter judgmental woman.. I wish the character was written out in a different way - cause the plot is great.
As to humor - this is not the book filled with funny moments, i was expecting more 'fun'. Overall it was ok/not so great read.
Found this book to be sad, but true. However it was somewhat predictable. I would of liked it to go on showing more of the way you could merge the family as one with both having busy careers and seeing the other Mothers treatment of her when she marries a billionaire but still keeps her career.
Marta Zinsser is not your typical mom. She doesn't care about fashion and makes no apologies for it. She likes to be different. While the other moms in her wealthy Seattle neighborhood are driving expensive cars, Marta is riding on her Harley Davidson motorcycle. Marta is perfectly happy the way she is, however her 10 year old daughter wishes she could be more like the other moms. This is a great book about embracing your unique style and being comfortable in your own skin. Marta definitely marches to the beat of her own drum and doesn't conform to society's "norm".
This is a must read book. It leaves you feeling good about being different!
Marta is the odd-duck heroine of the book, and her character really resonates with me. She hasn't a clue how to fit in, and mostly can't be bothered with external influences that tell her how to be rather than just being herself. That is until her daughter begins to point how nice it would be to have a more normal mom. The story is much more textured and engaging than what I've described; I'll let the author tell her own story.
I recommend this book to anyone who has been baffled by the social structure, the A list, mean girls, and just trying to be yourself amidst lots of pressure to fit in. Beautiful book. Nicely injected with romance for the strong woman, but most of all a story of loving oneself and finding your place in the world.
Enjoy!
